One would be to tightly pull apart and reassemble business model vs industry vs peer group. For us, we wanted to use journalism as a strategy, but we weren’t in the journalism industry; journalism itself doesn’t make money and it isn’t a business model. It’s more of a subset of the larger group of media. That left us a bit blind for years. What I’ve found over the years is that we were particularly good at helping people hire technical talent. Secondly, build in self-built reminders for checking your health – what we tend to do is have a team retreat every June and an all-team day every December. Lastly, for founders, it’s easy to forget that what you do should be fun; the rest of your team is looking to you for leadership – stress from work won’t help with that. There’s a sense of freedom that comes with having fun in your role; it can even help with coming out of your blindness.
